[ mood | blank ]

My mother always warned that when something you do for pleasure no longer becomes anything but a chore to do, it was time to move on with your life and let it go.

Cherrystyle was created nearly three years ago by an amazing woman and designer as a labor of love. She was kind enough to share it with the rest of us who were not nearly as talented or that didn't have the time/interest in making our own layouts. Over the remaining three years she made it into a large community that has created some of the greatest and most popular layouts on LiveJournal (and GreatestJournal!).

When she could no longer devote the time she wanted to and when it became a chore for her, three of us took it over ourselves so that it would not languish. The new Cherrystyle held to the same quality and ideals as the original and we've had a good run of just over a year ourselves.

Unfortunately (or sometimes fortunately) times change and with that things in our lives change as well. Some of us no longer have the time or interest to devote to Cherrystyle and some of us have become frustrated in general with both LiveJournal and the people who use it. Whatever our individual reasons it is time that Cherrystyle changes yet again. This time we are closing it down for good.

The website will be taken down, the community comments locked, and ownership given back to the original owner. Please do not come to the maintainers' personal journals to bug them about this. Our decision is final.

I cannot say what the other maintainers and designers will do, as that is a decision for them to make on their own. We may return to designing with time, but no longer will do so through this community.

Thank you all for being a part of Cherrystyle and contributing to the success it became. Best of luck in the future!

Do It Yourself Styles [Tuesday
March 21st, 2006 at 9:36am]

[ mood | busy ]

I've received several emails over the past few weeks asking about the Do It Yourself S1 styles that are no longer on the site. I thought I'd just make an announcement letting you know that it was entirely intentional. Those styles will not be returning in the foreseeable future. There was far too much abuse of the rules in regards to them as people were editing them and claiming that they made them. I figured it would be best for all involved if they were just taken off the site.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

New Site Back Up [Sunday
January 8th, 2006 at 11:31am]

[ mood | accomplished ]

The website is up and running, totally re-designed. If you signed up for an account previously you will need to do so again because the database of users was corrupted and I had to delete it. I apologise for this in advance and hopefully the same sort of sign-up errors will not be repeated with this system.

This new version of the site is designed for easier access and much neater features. For example once you are on the summary page for a style you can click on the screenshot and it will now show a bigger version so you can get a better idea of what the style looks like. You can also download the FAQ items as PDFs, or email them to friends in case they need help. Less useful features like messaging and such are disabled, but if there is a need for whatever reason I can look into it. There are a ton of modifications that can be made to this system, so if you have any ideas of what you'd like to see let me know.

The FAQs and forums are down for the time being because they're taking more work to integrate. Until then, please be aware of this and have some patience. You can still access the Installation Tutorials at my personal website.

As a final note I should point out that because I just spent the last few days adding all of the styles back to the site that there might be ones out of place, with the wrong screenshot, etc. Please let me know if you find anything!

That said, enjoy!

Scheduled Downtime [Wednesday
January 4th, 2006 at 9:46pm]

[ mood | aggravated ]

This is just a note to let you all know that the website will be down starting tonight until probably after the weekend. I've been having some issues with the software I use on it and I've finally decided to just take it down and re-do the site entirely. During this time you will not be able to access the website or the styles. I apologize in advance if anyone is inconvenienced by this, but it's a very necessary evil.

Once the site is back up and running I'll make an announcement.

Planned Downtime [Thursday
October 6th, 2005 at 2:40pm]

[ mood | productive ]

Hey guys I just wanted to let you guys know a few things.

- There will be some planned downtime this weekend, probably starting Friday night and hopefully finished up by Saturday night. The reason is that my old account ezsleeze is running out of paid time and since I do NOT use it any longer, I figured it'd be stupid to pay for two accounts on LJ. That said, I will have to make all of the styles on THIS account and edit all of the style .zip files accordingly. We're talking 50+ layouts. It's going to be a mell of a hess, so please bear with me while I get this sorted out.

- We have a bunch of new styles on the site! As always, the talented verymad_affair of frenchie_icons has created some wonderful S2 layouts. These are Component and are great :] We also have a new free override layout from jaysus and it's fab. I really dig her work and hopefully she can hook us up some more ;)

- Please, please read the FAQ before you use the Contact Us form. I get between 5-10 emails a day from people asking questions that are in the FAQ! I've had to adopt the policy of not responding to anyone who asks a question that's in it, so if you aren't getting a reply please check there first!

- On the above note, I also apparently didn't get a few emails that I should have and that I wanted to respond to. Who knows what Gmail's problem is? Anyway, if you feel that you might have been one of those people...please re-send!

- I know the community has been kind of quiet lately and for that I apologise. Myself, I got in an anti-layout funk for the past couple of months, but I think it's slowly ebbing. Stay tuned ;)

That's it! Thanks for your patience and patronage. Have a good Thursday :D

More Layouts & Reminders [Tuesday
July 5th, 2005 at 10:11pm]

[ mood | chipper ]

I just wanted to let you all know that over the course of the next week I will be adding a few (try about 50!) of the old styles from the old site to the new site. Thanks to the always gracious and talented Lisa Monique, you will have your choice of styles doubled. There are only six up right now and I'm working on more.

A few things to keep in mind!

1. The old layouts look BEST in Internet Explorer. They will work in Firefox, but there is quite a bit of transparency that just doesn't work in anything but Internet Explorer. We will NOT be fixing this so please do not complain if it looks "bad" in your browser. All of these styles worked perfectly for me running Internet Explorer, Windows XP, and a resolution of 1024x768.

2. CREDIT IS ESSENTIAL. It is also non-negotiable. If there are any sorts of credits either in the HTML or the layout itself, you must keep them there.

3. Comments are highly valued and appreciated. We like to know what your thoughts are regarding a style and honestly we get very few comments when people take the styles. For example, verymad_affair's Madonna S2 style is the most popular one at the site with over 700 downloads. THERE ARE 17 COMMENTS ON IT. That's it! Show her you actually appreciate the hard work she does, people. It's not hard and it really makes our day. Plus it inclines us to do more of them, as we get nothing from running the site and the community apart from this.

4. Please keep in mind that the Contact Us form on the website is abused far too often. I get between 15-20 emails a day from people asking questions that are found in the site's FAQ. I don't have time or desire to sit and answer them all. From this point on if your question is found anywhere on the site I won't respond to your email. If you post in the Forums asking, I will just post a link to the FAQ. Also, styles_help is grossly under-utilized. Posting there allows other members to answer you, not just a maintainer so your odds at getting help are better there.

That all said, questions? Concerns? Free cookies?

JournalShare [Friday
May 27th, 2005 at 4:37pm]

[ mood | excited ]

Well I want to thank all of you for your patience and the emails I got with thanks and well-wishing! Anyway I'm all set to unveil the newest facet of CherryStyle.

Journal Share is here, are you ready?

What IS JournalShare anyway?

JournaShare was originally conceptualized by me as a way for users of all different journal sites to come together and share their creations. I found that there were so many scattered creators on all the sites that many users found it frustrating to find what they wanted. Thus JournalShare was created.

The purpose of JournalShare is to maximize the efficiency of the style and graphic communities across the Internet by allowing all users to submit/rate/download files. Our belief is that this allows for the most diversity; as the larger our base of submitters is, the more likely a user is to find something that will perfectly match their tastes. All of this is done under the watchful eye of senior members, who are determined to keep the site as free of copyright infringement as possible.

How is JournalShare different than CherryStyle?

Rather than a small group of creators, anyone can make something and submit it to JournalShare! If you've ever made a layout, but not known how to share it with people this is the perfect opportunity for you. This also allows us to bring in members from all of the journal sites to one place!

What's new on the site?

We've added a much more comprehensive FAQ section where you can submit your own questions for answering, or submit your own set of questions/answers for the archive. You can also now comment on each FAQ entry, letting us know what we should add to it.

The downloads section will be getting more and more categories, so that users submitting things will know right where to put stuff.

The Contact Us form has had a slight revamp and now there are specific inquiries that you can specify. Makes communication a lot easier.

Lastly we have added an entire section of the site for Resource links. If you have a list of websites that you'd like to share with other users, you can do so now. Anyone can submit links, rate them, or comment about them.

What you can expect next...

We'll be bringing you a wide variety of styles and themes, as well as in-depth tutorials and other coding information. Our members have experience in so many things that you should be able to find EXACTLY what you want here.

So there you have it! That's what the site was down for today and what's going on with CherryStyle - watch it as it evolves. If you have any other questions feel free to post them here and I'll do my best to answer what I can. Keep mind mind that the site is still under minor construction, so if something doesn't work for you let us know.

And last of all, just as a heads-up I've drug another two people in as moderators for this endeavor. Everyone wave to appleweiland and morphinae!

Website Changes and Downtime [Friday
May 27th, 2005 at 11:32am]

[ mood | busy ]

Hey there folks, happy Friday!

Anyway the reason I'm writing is to let you know that the website will be down probably for the rest of the day. I have a NEW PROJECT that I'm integrating into CherryStyle, but it requires that the site be down so I can install/move stuff onto the server. I don't expect that it will be down past midnight CST, but I could be wrong if it takes me longer.

If anyone has any questions or whatnot, feel free to post them here.

Thanks for your understanding.

Random Updating [Wednesday
May 11th, 2005 at 9:49pm]

[ mood | dorky ]

Evening folks! Well just a couple of quick things and I'll let you go on your way ;)

1. There are TWO new S2 layouts up by the wonderful verymad_affair of frenchie_icons. One is a Boxer layout and the other is a Component layout. Go check them out on the site!

However, please keep in mind that if you should visit any of the S2 help communities to READ their tutorials first. We caught a lot of negativity from their mods because our users didn't read tutorials there and just posted asking for help.

2. I have a new project that I'm working on and I need a couple volunteers. In order to offer your help, I need people who have (A) HTML/CSS experience (B) knowledge of the style system (as in, they know in a basic way how to make an S1 style) and (C) a messenger program that they can get on so I can pester them. If you think you'd be interested, please comment to this entry or email me. I may offer some sort of...compensation, maybe. Thanks.

3. I'm going to be having a contest for my birthday (heh who said you were the one who always got presents on your own birthday right? ;) )so stay tuned for details!

I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Downtime [Tuesday
April 26th, 2005 at 2:36am]

Hey everyone I just wanted to apologize for the downtime in the site today. Unfortunately the server where all of the styles are housed went down for a good part of the afternoon and I decided to just take the site completely offline. Thanks to the hard work of fyarr it's back up and running! :D He rocks, honestly. You should all bow down to his awesomeness.

During the downtime I also uploaded a new style and will be putting another one up tomorrow probably. I've been getting some beautiful images from SoOldSoGood.com, a site that sells vintage advertising from about 1900-1930. They make for some great layouts.

Now I return you to your regularly scheduled programming. Thanks for your guys' patience.

New Forum [Wednesday
April 20th, 2005 at 5:39pm]

[ mood | busy ]

Afternoon everyone :)

I just wanted to let you know that I've created new forums for Cherrystyle, as I've always hated the default ones that came with the software I used. There is a link on the main website, but you can access them at http://www.cherry-style.com/forum as well if you want to. You will need to register on the forums to access the support and other discussion. PLEASE PLEASE register with the same name on the forums as you did on the website (I will ban anyone I find that has not done so!). That way I can keep track of peoples' help requests.

Apart from that, have a lovely Wednesday.

New Tutorial [Friday
April 15th, 2005 at 2:18am]

Hey there folks! I just wanted to stop in and let you know that I've created a tutorial (with images!) for installing Free Layout overrides. I know that quite a few of you have been having some trouble setting them up, and hopefully this will help you.

Both installation tutorials are on my website at Illusionsboy.com or if you want to remember for later there is a link in the FAQ. For those of you that are new or aren't aware, the Cherrystyle website can be found HERE.

Hopefully in the next week or two I'll be adding some new styles. I've just been super swamped in the real world and haven't had time to make new ones. I'm also planning to offer some graphics tutorials as well as some basic information on how to customize the basic styles.

Also! verymad_affair has created a beautiful new S2 layout of Madonna, so go check it out. Really, go. You won't be sorry.

If you have any questions/concerns, please let me know.

New Journal, Bannings, Email Crash [Thursday
April 7th, 2005 at 9:50am]

[ mood | cheerful ]

New Journal
Hey everyone ezsleeze here, with a new journal. If you see any bizarre postings coming from this journal that would be me (okay so they come from every journal I have, shh). I just wanted to let you know before people started a racket about how someone was claiming to be me or that dingos ate their babies. Heh.

Stealing and Banning
In the history of Cherrystyle there have always been people who feel it is right to steal layouts or claim that they made them. There will probably ALWAYS be people that continue to do this because some people just have no respect for others or they're just rude. We will, however, not allow said people to continue doing so once we've found out. If you run across a journal you think might be one of ours and someone is claiming to have made it please do NOT confront them yourselves, flame them, or berate them in any way. We encourage you to either post a comment to a post here in the community or email me at admin @ cherry-style.com and the MODS will look into it.

That said, please don't steal things. It makes you look bad and it makes the creators angry. You can count on us closing down the community for good if this becomes a persistent problem. Personally I'd rather close it and move on than let myself be taken advantage of, and that's not a good thing for YOU guys. We're just trying to give what we can to the community, but stealing it robs us of the only thing we get in return - RESPECT.

Please never offer any of our styles as "public" on your own journal. This allows other people to take them without going through the proper channels and that's as good as stealing.

E-mail Crash
Lastly, due to my bumbling stupidity I've deleted all email that came in through admin @cherry-style.com in the last two or three days. If you sent me something I didn't get it. SO PLEASE RESEND IT (sorry for allcaps xD)

Anyway thanks a bunch for listening to me rant on as only a mod can ;) Have a good one!

Tutorial Ideas [Thursday
March 31st, 2005 at 2:57pm]

[ mood | determined ]

Hey guys, I was just kind of hoping I could get some feedback on this and what better place right?

Alright as you know I've created a tutorial that teaches you how to install a paid layout style, including pictures and going step-by-step. I'm wondering, are there any other tutorials people would like to see? Is there any other part of the process (other than an entire tutorial from start to finish) that you'd like to know how to do? Maybe simple customizations like color or images?

Please just post as a comment if you have any ideas. Thanks a million!

S2 Layouts [Wednesday
March 30th, 2005 at 4:02pm]

[ mood | disappointed ]

Hey guys I just wanted to announce that thanks to the genius of verymad_affair Cherrystyle is going to be offering a few S2 layouts for you to download. Now before you start getting TOO excited, keep in mind that S2 is drastically different in terms of installing and heavily customizing. As such, we're not really going to be offering much in the way of help with that. I barely know enough about the system to install with inclusive tutorials, so I'm hardly going to be able to tell you what you're doing wrong.

So! That said, go ahead and make your way to the Website and take a look if you're so inclined. Those of you that are familiar with S2, will be pleased I think.

And in other news, I appreciate that people from the community have been sharing my Installing New Styles tutorial that I have up on my website. It's really great empowering people like that and I want to encourage you to show it to whomever needs it. But I've had a run-in with someone who abused my time and generosity, so please keep in mind the hard work of others does not mean you can do whatever you want. We work hard for no real reason other than to make our members happy, so please don't ruin it for them and be a jerk.

Thanks tons and have a good day!

Edit: Yes there are no picture previews of the S2 yet. Working on it heh.

Edit Edit: The previews are up :)

Just a friendly reminder.... [Tuesday
March 29th, 2005 at 12:47pm]

Cherry Style is now up and running! Right now it has 19 styles available for download for the paid account and 9 layouts available for the free livejournal user.

Hopefully we'll be adding more layouts soon as well as mood themes. Also a huge thanks to ezsleeze for bringing Lisa Monique's 'baby' back to life. I know how much we appreciated all of Lisa's hard work, and now the legend and vision lives on! ;D

Hope you're all having a great week!

Mod Post [Wednesday
March 23rd, 2005 at 2:40pm]

Hey guys! I just wanted to post here for a minute to go over a few things and to check in with all of you. Cherrystyle (v2?) Website has been going strong and has almost 1,000 members again. I think the old site had closer to 10,000 before all was said and done, but I'm excited nonetheless.

Anyway onto the reason I'm posting.

Getting Help with Layouts/Customization

A lot of you have been asking for help with styles and with customization. This is fantastic! However, I just want to remind people that the ONLY appropriate places to do so are either in the community styles_help or in the Forums on the site. If you post a comment under a style, in response to the News, or send one via the Contact Us form we may never see it. This means your question may never get answered and I know that's frustrating.

So please, please, please keep your questions to styles_help or to the Forums on the site.

Not only are people coming to the site, they're also finding new things to download! houseofasher and I have been working hard and are now pleased to offer over 25 styles on the site. We're also planning on adding many more soon.

But! (there's always a but, isn't there?) We have been seeing a HUGE discrepancy between the number of styles downloaded and the number of comments given. If you're not commenting, we can't keep track of who's interested in what. If we can't track that, we can't come up with more styles you'll like. We also LOVE LOVE LOVE getting comments and they make us both smile like idiots.

So please, if you're downloading a style let us know. Underneath every style is a link to Comment (it's on the bottom right), and just drop us a line to let us know you took it. That would be AWESOME :D

New Forums!

We've also created new forums for you to post your ideas to. This beats the heck out of a long list here on the community and it allows you to get really detailed in what you'd like to see. This helps both US and YOU out.

If you're registered at the Website just go to:

Free Layout Ideas
Paid Layout Ideas

Anyhow thanks for being members and we appreciate your help! Have a good one.

Hello! [Tuesday

[ mood | busy ]
